Commonly Asked Questions:
What is the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program?
The AKC Canine Good Citizen program is a nationally recognized evaluation that tests a dog's manners, obedience, and behavior in everyday situations. It is an excellent goal for family pets and provides a strong foundation for advanced training, therapy dog work, and many dog sports.
Does my dog need to be AKC registered?
No. Dogs of any breed or mixed breed may earn the CGC, CGCA, and CGCU titles. AKC registration is not required to participate, although dogs may need an AKC Canine Partners number or similar enrollment to receive an official AKC title.
Can any breed earn a CGC title?
Yes. All breeds and mixed breeds are welcome. The evaluation is based on a dog's behavior, manners, and reliability, not its breed or size.
Does my dog need formal training first?
While formal training is not required, dogs should be comfortable performing the skills included in the evaluation before testing. We also offer training classes to help prepare dogs for success.
What happens if my dog doesn't pass?
If a dog does not pass the evaluation, they are welcome to continue practicing and retest at a later date. We'll explain which skills need improvement and offer recommendations to help your team prepare.
Do I receive a certificate?
Yes. Dogs that successfully pass receive the appropriate AKC title and certificate after the evaluation is submitted to the American Kennel Club.
Can I earn all three titles?
Yes. Many teams begin with the CGC before progressing to the Advanced Canine Good Citizen (CGCA) and Urban Canine Good Citizen (CGCU) evaluations as their skills and confidence grow.
